This TechTalk is about Direct Current (DC), what it does to power transformers and on how to interpret transformer Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) results in a convenient way.

DC occurs from power electronics in the grid, HVDC interconnections, renewable power generation, or small direct currents caused by geo magnetic effects. Due to the magnetic conductivity of transformer cores, even a small DC bias can have major effects including increased reactive power current requirements and greater losses. Moreover, transformer oil DGA results are often hard to interpret, to track, and to compare.

Siemens Energy Transmission Service has created two user friendly tools, which help transformer owners and operators with those challenges:

• The Direct Current Detector app helps to detect DC at your transformer by simply analyzing the humming sound of it.
• The SITRAM FreeCAM provides you an automatize interpretation of DGA results based on international standard like IEEE or IEC.
