Support for peak load operation
Enhance your peak load capabilitiesAs part of our ongoing commitment to meet the changing requirements of your operating assets, we offer the latest technology to help to enhance your operating plant capability and flexibility as part of Siemens Flex-Power Services™. One of our modernization products is Turn Up upgrade.
The Turn Up upgrade is part of the Siemens strategy to maintain the competitiveness of the SGT5-4000F (V94.3A) gas turbines which have been in operation for more than 15 years. The Turn Up upgrade can be implemented in order to combine full availability of both the minimum primary and secondary frequency reserve at a high continuous plant output above 100 % base load.
As the Turn Up upgrade is designed for the optimization of primary frequency response, fast load gradients are applied. Turn Up also supports peak load operation.
The Turn Up upgrade provides significant performance advantages and offers attractive financial payback options.
The Turn Up upgrade offers you a clearly quantifiable benefit. It refers to opening the compressor inlet guide vane beyond its standard design position. This leads to an increased compressor mass flow resulting in an increased gas turbine power output.
With Turn Up, Siemens offers a SGT5-4000F (V94.3A) upgrade that provides power above base load. Therefore a closer operation to the maximum efficiency point can be realized while the whole primary frequency response reserve is being preserved. Consequently, the gas turbine operates at higher part load and therefore at a higher efficiency level. The average power output of the plant will increase; a minor increase in average combined cycle efficiency can also be expected.
Benefits can include: *
- Improved gas turbine power output up to 6 MW in simple cycle units
- Up to 9 MW higher combined cycle power output as a result of the increased exhaust mass flow
- Compressor mass flow increase of up to 2.7 %
- Primary and secondary frequency reserve above 100 % power output
- Support for peak load operation
* Subject to specific technical plant evaluation
Scope of Supply
The Turn Up upgrade is just one of the many innovative modernization packages available.
The scope of this upgrade includes:
- Modified Inlet Guide Vane
- Instrumentation and control modification
The Turn Up upgrade with the above mentioned scope of supply is applicable for the SGT5-4000F (V94.3A). To further enhance your power plant, you may combine the Turn Up with one of the following other Siemens’ modernization products, e.g.:
- Turn Down
- Advanced Stability Margin Controller (aSMC)
We recommend the installation of this upgrade at a major outage. The Siemens Field Service offers a full range of field service capabilities to help you manage your maintenance and outage schedules.
Flex Power Services
The global energy market is changing due to increasing renewable power generation and decreasing power prices. This leads to new operating profiles with higher flexibility requirements for many fossil power plants. To answer this demand, Siemens developed Flex-Power Services™ for a wide range of changed operational requirements.
Flex-Power Service provides hard- and software solutions as well as studies and plant assessments. Due to the nature of the changing operational requirements, the solutions will often be influenced by the overall plant rather than individual components only. Therefore, Siemens develops solutions considering the integration of e.g. gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine and generators in a combined cycle power plant. Flex-Power Services can in many cases be provided as a retrofit for the Siemens service fleet and combined with other modernizations. Implementing these state-of-the-art features can help power plant components remain reliable and increase the competitiveness of the plant in the changing energy market.
