The Netze BW substation in Burladingen, Germany is one of the most innovative in the world. As well as incorporating clean air Blue switchgear with a rated voltage of 145 kV the substation uses the Noedra Node switchgear and transformer digitalization technology to enable more eﬃcient and economic management and better-informed operational decisions.

Siemens Energy delivered a comprehensive concept for a fully digital and eco-friendly substation in Burladingen. Key innovations include:

SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear (GIS)
The world’s first GIS with a rated voltage of 145 kV insulated with clean air (80 % nitrogen, 20 % oxygen). This climate-neutral technology eliminates the costs and efforts associated with SF₆handling, recycling, and reporting. Combined with vacuum interrupter technology, it offers “sealed for life” performance with virtually zero maintenance.
Digital measurement with LPIT
Low-Power Instrument Transformers (LPIT) ensure accurate current and voltage measurement. Data is digitized and transmitted in real time for evaluation, enabling a compact and reliable solution.
Noedra Node switchgear and transformer digitalization
Delivered through Noedra Node, two 40 MVA transformers and the switchgear are equipped with digital intelligence and cloud-based technology. Sensors capture operational parameters, which are analyzed in the cloud, allowing load optimization and predictive maintenance.

Zero SF₆ – just clean air

The 8VN1 uses clean air insulation and vacuum switching technology for voltages up to 145 kV and supports the highest standards of technical performance and reliability, together with low lifecycle costs. It delivers excellent interrupting performance at rated nominal current and rated short circuit current without degradation. It also has a long working life, due to being hermetically sealed to protect it from anything which may cause decomposition. It’s ready for the future, because clean air is the future.

By eliminating SF₆ and using clean air insulation, the substation achieves climate neutrality and follows environmental regulations without incurring additional costs for handling, recycling, or reporting.
