Decarbonization: Our Goals, Commitment and Roadmap

Energy transition is on the horizon

Driving decarbonization

Our world is changing, and so should we.

Our world is changing, and so should we.

The implications of climate change paired with the increase in energy demand result in major challenges for our planet. As temperatures climb globally, roughly 770 million people still do not have access to electricity, the heart of energy supply systems and long-range growth. And as we look into the future, we see even more reason to take sustainable action. Studies show that global energy demand could rise as much as 25% through 2040 – along with increased level of climate damaging greenhouse gases.

For this reason, the central question facing Siemens Energy is this: How can we fulfill our task of meeting the growing demand for electricity worldwide and at the same time take on the responsibility of actively shaping the path to a climate-friendly future – in a sustainable, affordable and reliable manner? In short: How can we successfully implement a decarbonization journey that benefits our customers, societies at large and ourselves?

At Siemens Energy, we’re supporting our customers in transitioning to a more sustainable world using our innovative technologies, extensive experience, and an ambitious strategy to drive the decarbonization of global energy systems.

Our emission reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The initiative drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based emissions reduction targets.

An important step in our journey to energize society includes decarbonizing our business activities along our entire value chain. This includes our supply chain, operations, and portfolio. These decarbonization activities enable us to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDG 7 “Affordable and Clean Energy” and SDG 13 “Climate Action”.

Our biggest lever for decarbonization is through our portfolio, which is able to make a valuable contribution to the energy transition by reducing emissions at our customers. Furthermore, our decarbonization efforts concentrate on our supply chain and own operations.

Decarbonized products, services and solutions for our customers

Combining conventional and renewable energy systems are the keys to meeting the world’s needs for sustainable, reliable, and affordable power. Combating climate change and addressing increasing energy demands are top priorities.

Our goal is to reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from use of sold products 28% by 2030 from a 2019 base year [SBTi4 approved].

Our Energy of Tomorrow program ensures we achieve this goal by:

  • Transforming energy markets with our products, services and solutions along the energy value chain
  • Accompanying our customers in their transition
  • Step-by-step approach to decarbonize our portfolio

Climate-neutral own operations

We have committed to become climate neutral in own operations by 2030 and have launched our Climate Neutral Program to achieve this ambitious target. This includes reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030, compared to 2019 [SBTi approved].

Our levers are:

  • Increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 59% in 2019 to 100% by 2023 [SBTi approved]
  • Reducing the consumption of primary energy
  • New mobility concepts
  • SF6-free Blue Portfolio
  • Compensation of remaining emissions as of 2030

SGRE achieved carbon neutrality in its own operations at the end of fiscal year 2019, including offsetting unavoidable emissions. It expanded its ambitions by setting a net-zero emissions target covering Scope 1 to 3 by 2040.

Decarbonized Supply Chain

We’re partnering with our suppliers to decarbonize our supply chain.

In 2020, we initiated a Carbon Reduction@Suppliers pilot project by identifying the CO₂ footprint of our suppliers and developing a decarbonization assessment process.

In 2021 we engaged with approximately 100 suppliers by conducting the decarbonization due diligence assessment. According to the supplier’s responses a lot of them already implemented and further plan to implement CO₂ reduction measures and therefore support our target to reduce 30% scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from purchased products and services till 2030.
