Siemens Energy will supply power generation and process electrification equipment for a new UPM pulp mill in Uruguay
Siemens Energy will supply power generation and process electrification equipment for a new UPM pulp mill being built near the city of Paso de los Toros in Uruguay. The order includes two industrial steam turbine generator sets, low-voltage switchgear, motors and drives as well as construction supervision, commissioning and training. The new pulp mill will have an annual production capacity of two million tons of eucalyptus pulp and will be one of the most modern, efficient and sustainable pulp mills worldwide. The eucalyptus used for pulp production will come from sustainable plantations.

Sappi is planning extensive modernization of steam boiler in its Gratkorn mill in Austria, which is Europe's largest mill. This investment in cutting-edge technology involves migration from a coal-fired boiler to a multi-feed boiler in two phases. Siemens Energy delivers the new distributed control system for this project.
Implementation of a gas turbine in tissue drying processThe Yankee drying process is the most common drying method. Small gas turbines are desirable for use in the Yankee process because the demand for hot air is lower compared with the Through Air Dryer (TAD) process. TAD uses heat to dewater the product instead of the conventional mechanical pressing. This produces a much softer paper and reduces the demand for raw material from 8% to 30%, but dramatically increases the drying load. The high demand of hot air means that the implementation of gas turbines up to 10 MW is profitable for the TAD process.

As part of China's efforts to reduce coal consumption nationwide, it became crucial for the Shanghai Orient Champion Paper to respond to the government's coal-to-gas policy. Following Shanghai Orient Champion Paper's mission, the management decided to invest in its own clean power generation and began to explore the option of clean and efficient gas-fired combined on-site heat and power generation.
