Energy Certification is key to make the sustainable energy transition happen

Siemens Energy is establishing a partner ecosystem for the verification and certification of renewable energy, down to the products and goods made from them. This ecosystem will consider the entire Power-to-X value chain, requiring partnerships with independent, accredited bodies and other companies from the energy sector.


With the help of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), and by connecting physical assets to the digital decentral infrastructure, Clean Energy Certificates will be issued through government-approved channels. Products will be tagged with a certificate which will identify the product’s energy origin and carry this throughout its value chain. The ecosystem will be open and will operate across sectors, industries and borders.

Customers and partners are welcome to join the ecosystem to participate in this evolving new market in many ways.  For example, certifying their renewable energy production or the production of hydrogen by electrolysis or even certifying the production of green fuels.

Haru Oni – exploring the future of certified e-fuel from wind and water

The Haru Oni project demonstrates a broad spectrum of innovative, climate-relevant technologies at one location. Synthetic fuel is produced from water, wind energy and CO2 captured from the air. This fuel is a liquid energy carrier that emits about 90% less CO2 than the fossil counterpart. In the case of e-gasoline, it is instantly compatible with existing liquid fuel infrastructure. The Clean Energy Certificates are already proving the green origin of the fuel, starting with e-fuels applications in the Porsche motorsport fleet.

Clean Energy Certification enables "Sustainability Claims" in an automated, tamper-proof and government-approved manner. A higher market value can be achieved for sustainably certified products, and customs and tax relief can be granted for imports and exports. All companies that want to market their products as sustainable need such certification. This is necessary to ensure traceability of the green origin of the respective product throughout the entire Power-to-X value chain.

Whether you are currently planning your facility or your production facility is already operational, you can connect to the Clean Energy Certification System. In most cases, only a small amount of effort is required for your measurement data to be read via your Instrumentation & Control system and for your certificates to be generated. A shutdown of your plant is usually not necessary.

The certification process is comparable to classic ISO certifications, but the products are continuously certified per production unit. In order to receive a corresponding certificate, companies must comply with a so-called mass balance approach for their products. The mass balance is used to determine the proportion of sustainable raw materials in the end product.

We will advise you to choose the optimal certification scheme for your business purposes and prepare the certification together with you. There are document checklists depending on the selected certification scheme. You will receive a list of required documents with which you can prepare your certification in a structured way. 

We are partnering with Certification Bodies in order to apply an international accepted certification standard.

It is important to distinguish between two types of fees. During the connection to the Clean Energy Certification System and its commissioning, you pay an onboarding fee. Later, you pay a fee for each transaction carried out during certificate creation and transfer.

The Clean Energy Certification System is based on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). The use of Private Public Key settings ensures a high level of security. All data is encrypted, stored only at the customer's site and not shared with other partners without explicit permission and key settings.
