Materials innovation emerged as a central enabler across the entire portfolio. In a world of volatile supply chains and tightening regulation, materials are no longer just a cost factor they are a strategic asset. The Innovation Platform Materials is structured around three high-potential clusters: AI-based material discovery and simulation, self-driven laboratories, and advanced manufacturing and circularity. Together, they connect data-driven material design with automated, closed-loop experimentation and scalable, low-carbon manufacturing approaches. This tight integration significantly accelerates development cycles, improves qualification speed and strengthens supply-chain resilience while increasing the likelihood of material breakthroughs.

At the Innovation Center Berlin (ICB), we are focusing on self-driven laboratories. Here, we leverage automation, AI, and closed-loop experimentation to redefine how materials are discovered and validated. By significantly reducing iteration times and enabling autonomous experimentation, the ICB plays a critical role in accelerating materials innovation and translating it into tangible impact for future Siemens Energy products.

Scaling autonomy

The Innovation Platform Robotics is reimagining how Siemens Energy products are built by driving the next wave of factory automation for complex energy systems. By combining advanced industrial robotics with strategic exploration of humanoid technologies, the platform aims to unlock radically higher productivity, flexibility, and safety in manufacturing. Capabilities such as inspection robotics, asset management, and robotic fleet management strengthen this ecosystem, while breakthroughs in AI, sensing, and computing make it possible to move from isolated pilots to truly autonomous, industrial-scale impact.

At the Innovation Center Berlin (ICB), this vision is brought to life through a strong focus on integrating AI into robotics and humanoids in close proximity to real manufacturing environments. By bridging innovation with factory reality, the ICB accelerates the deployment of autonomous solutions, directly contributing to increased factory output, operational efficiency, and scalable impact in Siemens Energy’s production landscape.

Engineering availability

Few themes resonated more strongly than resilience. Power grids are becoming increasingly decentralized and must cope with a higher penetration of volatile generation profiles. The Innovation Platform Resilient Grids focuses on future grid architectures, smart and resilient assets, solid - state power electronics, advanced analytics, and AI - enabled transparency. The goal is clear: maximize energy availability under stress, treating resilience not as a cost, but as a value driver.

At the Innovation Center Berlin (ICB), this ambition is translated into tangible innovation through the development of power electronics–enabled grid solutions. With a strong focus on technologies such as the Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) Control Board and the Solid-State Transformer, the ICB plays a key role in advancing more flexible, stable, and resilient grid infrastructures, bridging cutting-edge engineering with real-world application needs.

Beyond wind and solar

The portfolio of the Innovation Platform Clean Energy Systems is complemented by a focused effort on firm low-carbon generation and industrial electrification. Excluding wind and photovoltaics, this platform targets technologies such as fuel cells, fusion, and long-duration energy storage. Strong techno-economic and regulatory analyses ensure innovation efforts remain grounded in realistic market pathways, with the ambition to deliver scalable offerings and validated pilots for emerging customer segments.

At the Innovation Center Berlin (ICB), this vision is driven forward through hands-on development and experimentation with next-generation technologies. This includes initiatives such as the Fusion Island—a next-generation petawatt laser—as well as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which enable highly efficient, low-carbon electricity generation through advanced electrochemical processes. By bridging frontier technologies with practical validation, the ICB plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of clean, firm energy systems.

This solution is already being used in pilot projects, such as the certification of green fuels from Haru Oni’s production plant and green hydrogen from Nobian’s electrolysis plant, both of which use renewable energy sources.
