The rise of renewable energy and high fuel prices in Europe have significantly altered the operational profile of combined cycle power plants (CCPPs). With reduced operating hours, CCPPs must adapt to unpredictable scenarios, including potential mothballing. Utilities need to generate remaining megawatts efficiently and be ready to respond to premium market prices. This paper highlights optimization strategies for CCPPs, focusing on improved startup and shutdown processes, using the Mainz Wiesbaden CCPP KW3 as a case study for transitioning from base load to cycling mode. It also discusses successful operational flexibility enhancements and future upgrade tests.
