The growth of renewables in North America, coupled with volatile fuel prices and evolving legislation, is transforming the operational profiles of combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) from base load to cyclical modes. This shift necessitates greater flexibility in asset utilization for power producers to meet revenue goals and maintain profitability. CCPP operators must efficiently generate power and be prepared to ramp up during peak market prices. This paper discusses strategies to optimize operational flexibility, focusing on enhanced startup and shutdown processes, including improved hot, warm, and cold starts, as well as ramp-up and ramp-down gradients.
