Born connected 3.0: From “connected” products to systemsDigitalization is a chance and an enabler. It empowers industries to tackle their current challenges, for example, implementing improvements in performance, health, safety and environmental topics, as well as cost and risk reductions. However, in order to benefit from digitalization, it is necessary to generate data first. While these opportunities seem to already be common sense in many industries, the transmission and distribution industry was not able to benefit from this industrial revolution for a long time.

Transformers are a vital and decisive part of power grids – no matter if conventional or digital. The Sensformer™ will enable you to digitize this important keystone of your grid. Now your transformers are connective!
The digitally connected transformers Sensformer Advanced and Sensformer Edge offer great advantages: Transformer downtimes can be reduced, operation of the transformers can be made more flexible, and at the same time, costs can be reduced and environmental protection improved.
Both Sensformer versions contain the necessary sensors for entering the most important operating parameters – such as oil-level, temperature, and LV winding current. The biggest difference lies in data storage and analysis. While Sensformer Advanced saves the data in a cloud and processes it further, Sensformer Edge does this directly in the substation on a local computer.
The digital twin is an important element of Sensformer Advanced and Sensformer Edge. It allows operators to simulate the behavior of the physical asset in real time and thus creates a completely new type of experience and value-add applications: An active overload manager allows Sensformer operators to manage temporary overloads without compromising on lifetime. With a full temperature view, the current heat status can always be checked, a life consumption view gives indications on the residual lifetime of the asset. Furthermore, based on the digital twin, for highly developed applications, additional advanced sensors can be used on the asset, e.g. bushing, partial discharge or DGA sensors.
At the product level, Sensformer Advanced is equipped with physical sensors that collect data in real time and send it via an IoT device to the cloud platform. All data is stored together with the digital twin, the design-data-based virtual replication of the transformer on the cloud. The data is analyzed on the cloud platform using various applications to improve operational performance. As an operator you can access the platform via browser application.
Of course, we comply with state-of-the-art security and encryption technologies to protect your data.
The greatest advantage of Sensformer Advanced is the permanent availability of the information - the cloud platform can be accessed at any time and from anywhere also using a mobile phone. In addition, the applications on the cloud platform are always up to date, as updates and quality improvements are automatically installed as soon as they are available. Data storage, including backup and recovery features, is of course automatically implemented via the cloud.
With the Sensformer Edge the data is collected at the product level by physical sensors. The dataset includes information such as oil level, top oil temperature, and winding current information, as well as information on cooling inlet, outlet, and ambient temperatures. All data is stored together with the digital twin on the Edge device. You can easily analyze it on any PC in your local IT infrastructure.
The greatest advantages of Sensformer Edge are data privacy and processing times. As the data is stored and analyzed locally and offline, high data security and privacy rules and demands are met. There is no transfer of the measured and calculated customer data to any cloud. The required connection to the cloud platform is only used to push functional and cybersecurity updates to the Sensformer Edge infrastructure. The application response times are extremely short due to local data processing.
Despite offline data storage and analysis, we naturally offer updates, backup functions and data recovery functions on demand. Via a Remote Manager you can decide to update your applications and get quality improvements whenever this is convenient for you from the Siemens Energy Edge Hub.
Sensgear™ and Sensgear™ Advanced
In 2019, Siemens Energy extended the revolutionary connectivity concept of Sensformer™ to the entire transmission switchgear product portfolio, called Sensgear™. Sensgear™ equipment provides
GPS and local weather information, as well as the operationally most important measurement signals: gas density, temperature, circuit-breaker counter, position & readiness.
Now, Sensgear™ functionalities are enhanced: Sensgear™ Advanced offers more than monitoring. It now upgrades this functionalities to enhance productivity using a digital twin. Moreover, the upgrade offers the chance to benefit from advanced intelligence by using artificial intelligence. New benefits for transmission system operators are:
- increase power transmission by optimizing asset utilization and overload management
- minimize operational risks by tracking idle times and mechanical life trending
- improve service effectiveness, health and safety through predictive maintenance

The Sensgear™ portfolio comprises gas-insulated switchgear, circuit breakers and instrument transformers. Thanks to its artificial intelligence powered data analytics, it increases the efficiency and sustainability of your assets and operations, e.g. by preventive detection and early warning of suspicious & critical assets or gas leakages.
Gas leaking is recognized as the most frequent cause of failure for gas-insulated transformers. Thanks to artificial intelligence, Sensgear instrument transformers will be able to detect leakages in advance and generate business value out of the gas density measurement.
All our CO2 neutral Blue instrument transformers are delivered with the new Sensgear™ technology.
Fluid leakage and internal dielectric loss of insulations are the main causes of failure for oil-insulated transformers. Sensgear instrument transformers will pave the way toward a solution to these problems, providing transparency and predicting possible issues related to the product.
Capacitive voltage transformers pose a challenge to asset managers because their reliability issues may not be apparent. Thanks to the cloud connectivity concept, Sensgear capacitive voltage transformers can be an easy solution to a complicated challenge, allowing data to be obtained from several units without a cable connection.
Thanks to Sensarrester™ all main electrical functionalities of a surge arrester like surge counts, logbook of last events and total time of operation are now connective, allowing you to check the surge arrester’s status via online applications in real time. Sensarrester™ provides operators with a comprehensive and quick overview about their assets.
Sensbushing is able to generate data and results during service, with the huge benefit of simplifying the processing of the measured data for the overall bushing health status determination. AI-based algorithms will further improve asset management of bushings.
