Beijing’s Daying substation leads in eco-innovation with F-gas-free switchgear, ester oil transformers, and public green spaces for the community.
The Daying substation in Beijing’s Tongzhou district marks a groundbreaking milestone in low-carbon innovation and urban integration. Siemens Energy has equipped this new 110 kV facility with 11 state-of-the-art clean air 8VN1 Blue switchgear units, making it the city’s first clean air-insulated substation. Designed not only to deliver greener, more reliable electricity but also to blend seamlessly into the urban environment, Daying sets a new standard for sustainable energy infrastructure.
Customer challenge: Create a facility which delivers greener electricity and supports the local community
The aim of the SGCC Beijing Electric Power Company was to build a substation which would be actively welcomed by the people who live and work near it. Not only by strengthening the local power supply and doing so in an eco-friendly way, but by being aesthetically pleasing, open and accessible.
The solution: A digitally-integrated urban substation with zero carbon emissions
Behind the elegant exterior of the 110 kV Daying substation, with its brick-red solar panels and gray aluminum cladding, the greenest switchgear technology available has been installed. We provided eleven bays of F-gas-free, high-voltage 8VN1 Blue GISTM plus two ester oil transformers – instead of using traditional mineral oil transformers. As well as being Beijing’s first clean air-insulated substation with zero GWP, it is the first to be publicly accessible, having no perimeter walls and with a rooftop garden for local residents to enjoy.
The benefits: Greater grid resilience, lower emissions and an enhancement to the area
The new Daying facility represents a major step forward in the sustainable development of the city, making the power supply both greener and more robust. The Blue GISTM and ester oil transformers, together with the photovoltaic panels and geothermal heat pumps, will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 8,950 tons over the lifecycle of the substation. Local residents can make use of self-service charging stations, an energy education center and the inviting rooftop garden including a fitness trail.
“
The Daying Substation is of great significance – it enhances the regional power supply, strengthens grid resilience, advances the energy transition, and supports the green development of Beijing.

About the 8VN1 Blue GIS
The 8VN1 Blue GISTM uses clean air insulation and vacuum switching technology for voltages up to 145 kV. Unlike traditional switchgear that uses SF₆ gas for insulation, it has a global warming potential (GWP) of zero. The clean air it uses can be released into the atmosphere with zero harmful effects to people or the environment.
The technology is well proven; we have over 40 years of experience in vacuum switching technology, with high-voltage applications being developed since 2012.
