The expanded manufacturing and assembly site enhances reliability, emissions performance, and lifecycle support for customers.
The Fort Collins office of Siemens Energy has always been a “Technology Center”, along with numerous partners it offers integrated technology to reduce emissions, improve performance or increase reliability, often all three at the same time. Over the last twenty-five years we’ve developed some specialized technology in support of these offerings, all previously manufactured or assembled by industry partners.
We recently made the decision to bring two of these technologies in house: High Pressure injection Valves (HPIV) and Electronic Pre-Combustion Chamber injectors (EPCi). “This move is intended to support long-term availability, innovation, and lifecycle support,” said Ben Robertson, General Manager. “By internalizing assembly and testing, Siemens Energy aims to gain greater supply chain control, shortening lead times, enhancing quality, improving responsiveness and optimizing costs.”
Bringing these technologies in-house has created a new set of challenges for the Technology Center, but the facility will be up-and-running before fiscal 2027 begins, creating new opportunities for improving market share and supporting future development of the site.
The HPiV is a critical component in a high-performance fuel delivery system known as HPFi, the first combustion control technology for direct-injected, natural gas-fired industrial engines. HPFi is available as a fuel/gas control upgrade that is electronically controlled. It assists pipeline compressor operators in meeting stringent operating, performance, and emissions requirements.
“This technology is designed to address several characteristic challenges of direct-injected, large-bore, natural gas-fired engines such as poor air/fuel mixing and unbalanced fuel metering between cylinders,” said Robertson. “The HPFi system provides enhanced control of the fuel gas to provide an optimally mixed air/fuel charge that produces combustion performance and emissions characteristics demanded by our customers across North America and around the world.”
Most engines utilize a mechanical check valve that requires regular maintenance or replacement due to fouling of the valve. The EPCi improves reliability and reduces maintenance of the fuel injection system. The valve delivers an exact charge of fuel reliably with little maintenance and no adjustment.
Siemens Energy announced a new license agreement with Woodward Industrial Controls that enables Siemens Energy to acquire the rights, intellectual property, tooling, and manufacturing capabilities for the High Pressure Fuel Injection Valve (HPiV) system. The move marks a technology milestone for the HPiV platform and expands Siemens Energy’s U.S. manufacturing footprint in Fort Collins, Colorado—supporting its gas engine and compression business.
HPiV technology originated in a strategic partnership formed in 1999, combining deep application experience and proven fuel system know-how to support high-performance fuel delivery for years. This agreement represents the next step in a long-standing relationship between Siemens Energy and
Woodward Industrial Controls—building on a proven technology base and maintaining continuity for customers rather than introducing disruption.
Production and related operations for the HPiV system will transition from Woodward’s Fort Collins facility to Siemens Energy’s Gas Engine Technology Center in Fort Collins. The transition period is expected to take approximately six months, with full integration targeted for late 2026. Operationally, the move is designed to bring engineering, manufacturing, and product support into closer alignment to improve responsiveness across the HPiV lifecycle.
The transition represents an expansion of Siemens Energy’s local footprint in Fort Collins, supported by investment in tooling, equipment, and workforce growth. Fort Collins remains an important manufacturing and engineering location for Siemens Energy and aligns with the company’s broader U.S. manufacturing strategy—supporting domestic energy infrastructure and strengthening industrial capability.
