High-efficiency generators – The origin of electrical power

An electrical generator in a power plant converts mechanical energy, usually from a rotating turbine, into electrical energy. As the turbine spins the generator rotor, the resulting motion of the magnetic field relative to the stationary copper coils induces an electric current in the stator windings. This process is called electromagnetic induction, and it generates electricity. The current is then routed through output terminals to supply electricity to the power grid or local systems.

Power plants use alternators, also known as synchronous AC generators, to produce electricity. These generators convert mechanical energy, usually from gas or steam turbines, into alternating current (AC) via electromagnetic induction. Their ability to generate large-scale power with high efficiency makes them ideal for grid-connected power generation. They also help stabilize the grid by providing rotational inertia and supporting voltage and frequency regulation.

Furthermore, Siemens Energy generators can operate as synchronous condensers, providing short-circuit power and inertia to stabilize the grid.
