Three ways to respond to growing government pressure to decarbonize

Sector Coupling: The key lever for the decarbonization of all end-user sectors

Sector coupling refers to connecting the energy consuming sectors — primarily heating and cooling, mobility and industry — to the power generation sector. It substitutes fossil fuels with electricity from renewable resources and supports establishing 100% renewable energy systems. Sector coupling has the potential to reduce primary fossil energy consumption by 50% even while power demand grows by 25%. A 2020 study by BloombergNEF found that sector coupling could cut greenhouse gas emissions by 60% over the next 30 years.

Clean Hydrogen is multi-functional: Connecting power, mobility, and industry

Sector coupling includes a combination of direct and indirect applications. Direct applications imply the direct use of electricity in sectors where it is currently not yet used, i.e. electric vehicles, or electric heating systems for buildings. Indirect applications make use of electricity from renewable energy sources through a process called “Power-to-X”, where first, hydrogen is produced through electrolysis and then, other gases or liquids are subsequently synthesized, thus providing carbon-neutral, so-called “electricity-based” fuels for industry or transportation (i.e. shipping and aviation), that currently rely on the use of fossil fuels.

PEM Electrolysis — dynamic, efficient, clean

Electrolysis is a technology for producing clean hydrogen from renewable energy sources and is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This process takes place in an electrolyzer, of which there are several types that each function a bit differently.  

 

Our PEM electrolysis systems offer high efficiency at high power density, high product gas quality, low maintenance and reliable operation, and no chemicals or impurities. 

 

PEM electrolysis takes its name from the proton exchange membrane. Its special property is that it is permeable to protons but not to gases such as hydrogen or oxygen. As a result, in an electrolytic process the membrane takes on, among other things, the function of a separator that prevents the product gases from mixing.  

 

Unlike traditional alkaline electrolysis, the highly dynamic PEM technology is ideally suited to harvest volatile energy generated from wind and solar power.
