Celepsa, Peru: Powering the energy transition with the F(X) Advanced Turbine Efficiency Package

Celepsa’s Santo Domingo de los Olleros combined cycle plant in Peru was modernized with Siemens Energy’s F(X) Advanced Turbine Efficiency Package to boost gas turbine efficiency, increase power output, and reduce fuel consumption, enabling the reliable, flexible thermal generation needed to back up growing shares of solar and wind in the country’s energy mix while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

As Peru’s energy landscape evolves with an increasing share of renewable sources, Celepsa needed to ensure that its thermal generation assets could deliver the gas turbine efficiency and reliability needed to support the integration of intermittent energy like solar and wind. The Santo Domingo de los Olleros combined cycle power plant plays a critical role in this effort.

In addition to supporting grid stability, Celepsa, as part of the UNACEM Group, is committed to long-term sustainability goals. The company sought to increase their power output, reduce natural gas consumption, improve operational efficiency, and extend maintenance intervals—all without major infrastructure investments. These goals required a strategic approach to upgrading existing assets to maximize gas turbine performance.

To meet these goals, Celepsa implemented Siemens Energy F4(X) Advanced Turbine Efficiency Package (FX ATEP) during a planned major outage. The upgrade modernized the existing gas turbine with advanced aerodynamic and thermal technologies, significantly improving gas turbine efficiency and output while maintaining the plant’s original infrastructure.

The solution was developed through close collaboration between Celepsa and Siemens Energy, leveraging a long-standing partnership and shared commitment to innovation and operational excellence. The Santo Domingo de los Olleros plant operates under a long-term service agreement with Siemens Energy, building on a history of trusted collaboration that began in 2013.

The F(X) ATEP upgrade delivered measurable improvements in both plant efficiency and power output. It enabled Celepsa to generate more energy with less fuel, reduce emissions, and support the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The upgrade also extended the time between major maintenance intervals, optimizing long-term asset performance.

The advanced thermal performance upgrade achieved a power output increase of more than 7%, exceeding both the power increase and efficiency improvements initially projected—surpassing the performance expectations set by Siemens Energy.

The project demonstrates how targeted gas turbine upgrades can unlock significant value from existing infrastructure—supporting both business goals and national energy transition efforts.
