Gas turbines for Iowa industrial and data center demand

For the first time in decades, Iowa is experiencing a significant surge in electricity demand. Grid planners forecast a 30–60% increase in statewide load - equivalent to approximately 22–44 terawatt hours - by 2030. This growth is largely fueled by expanding digital infrastructure, including data centers, alongside broader industrial development.

To support this demand, a new open-cycle power plant has been proposed. The facility is designed to be equipped with three SGT6-5000F gas turbines, three SGen6-1000A generators, and an Omnivise T3000 control system. Pending regulatory approval, the plant is expected to become operational in 2030.

Designed to deliver high output and operational flexibility, the SGT6-5000F is a proven heavy-duty gas turbine for the 60 Hz market. The technology offers fast startup and load changes, and with a specialized capacitor, it is well suited for power systems that must respond quickly to variable grid demand from large energy use campuses. With simple cycle output of up to 260 MW per unit and combined cycle efficiency approaching 60%, it supports scalable power generation for both baseload and dynamic operating profiles.
